BIRMINGHAMBALLET
Artistic and Executive Director Cindy Free has led the company for nearly two decades, cultivating the superior talent from around the southeast. Birmingham Ballet has received critical acclaim with performances from its semi-professional Family Series and now the Professional Repertory Company is stepping out on its own with its debut performance, HUES.
BIRMINGHAM BALLET celebrates its 20th anniversary this season. BIRMINGHAM BALLET began as an academy and grew such an array of young dancers that a semi- professional wing was added to accommodate the emerging talents of the Birmingham community. With such a strong and grounded semi-professional track, BIRMINGHAM BALLET has now developed a Professional Repertory Company.
Free says of the new Repertory Company that it is “designed to bring the heritage of ballet forward into the present age and reinvent it so that audiences of this era can find the art of ballet relevant in their own lives”. She created a repertory company to showcase “shorter works of art with universal themes that people can be emotionally touched by, moved by, and inspired by.”
The Repertory Company is comprised of seven paid professional dancers and six apprentices. The company is made up of dancers with strong classical and contemporary ballet training and experience. Birmingham Ballet features some of the most impressive talents in the Alabama dance community. Whether presenting classical treasures from the Family Series or eclectic mix of works with the Repertory Series, Birmingham Ballet dancers shine with exceptional artistry, passion, and drive. The Company consists of dancers from several different states throughout the southeast. Birmingham Ballet's company members are strong, versatile artists who have extensive experience in a variety of styles. Members of the apprentice program have the opportunity to learn classical and contemporary repertoire, perform with the professional company and tour within the region.
